More Mainers Installing Windmills

November 9, 2008

When Bruce Gallup and his wife Lindy decided to go green and install a 50 foot windmill they weren’t expecting they’d become a local attraction. However, two or three times a week passers-by stop and ask all sorts of questions.

While publicly owned wind turbines have become more popular, so have individual ones in backyards.

To function efficiently, turbines need to be placed in an area with wind sppeds of at least 8 mph. More than 50 wind turbines were installed in Maine in 2007, including one at former president Gearge H. W. Bush’s Kennebunkport Maine home.

The Gallup’s energy bill has been reduced from $250/month to about $25/month. They realize it will take about 15 years to recoup the cost, but understand that it will have benefits well into the future.
